The Art of Social Media Management—What You Need to Know
Gavin Fitzgerald • June 23, 2021

Since the dawn of social media platforms, the field of social media management has somewhat become an overnight success. Skyrocketing their status within the online and digital marketing world within a short span of time, it’s been made obvious that everyone will need their services in order to promote and maintain a business’ brand.

“What is social media management?”

Basically, it is the process of coming up with content for your chosen social media platform, as well as the analysis of the data garnered from the posted contents.

One important thing to remember about social media management is that it should motivate the intended target market to interact with the brand. If a post goes unnoticed, you can bet that something went wrong with the creation of the content itself (it wasn’t captivating enough, for example) or the target market wasn’t interested at all (maybe the post was irrelevant to their experience). In such cases, it’s time to get back to the drawing board, where much better content would be formulated to better reach your target audience.

“Why is social media management considered an art by some?”

Have you ever felt captivated by a piece of art before? A painting? A vase? A statue? Did you feel that the masterpiece was trying to tell you something, making you feel a certain kind of emotion?

If your answers to these were “Yes,” then you may already have an idea as to why the field of social media management is somewhat similar to or closely resembled to art!

The goal of social media management is to garner the attention of the intended target market. If the posted content were to accumulate reactions and followings from the latter, then you already have the well-needed data in your hands. This data, when analysed, would be used to interpret and determine the next step for the client’s intended campaign for his or her brand.

It isn’t so much about how beautiful a certain branded post is, but rather, was it able to catch the attention of the consumers? If it did, was the message of the brand conveyed properly? Did the target audience understand the intended message?

These are just some of the vital questions to ask when practising social media management.

“Does social media management include customer support as well?”

In some aspects, it does.

Remember, the job of a social media manager would be to garner response and feedback from the target market as well. If the social media page of an internet provider, for example, were to be bombarded by comments of slow internet connection, it is the social media manager’s job to look into the situation and reply to the complainant. It is also their job to collect information about the concern, then forward that to the client. They may, in turn, study the data and come up with a well-needed solution to the problem!

Of course, a slow internet connection may be fixed by simply coordinating with the technicians and repair team—but formulating a divisive and positive post about the situation may help control the overall “damage.”

The Bottom Line

Social media management is never an easy task. Content planning and creation, data gathering and analysis, and customer interaction are what eats up most of a social media manager’s time. Nonetheless, a well-seasoned expert in this field wouldn’t have a hard time averting the whole situation. They will be able to handle such tasks with ease, like an artist who is on his way towards creating another masterpiece.
