On-Page SEO and Off-Page SEO_ What You Need to Know
Gavin Fitzgerald • September 20, 2021

Many businesses pour great efforts into getting the word out about their brand, and digital methods are the norm because of the Internet’s potential to have a broad reach. One such method is search engine optimisation (SEO).

SEO uses the relevant keywords so that a website will rank higher on search engine results pages (SERPs). If a website ranks high enough, there’s a chance that a prospective customer will see it—in turn, it will create profit if the business suits their needs.

Many people don’t know that there are many types of SEO, but the most prominent are On-Page and Off-Page, respectively.

What’s the difference between the two? We’re here to tell you everything there is to know about the two. Read on below to learn more.

The Differences Between On-Page and Off-Page SEO

The main difference between the two is that on-page SEO is used in web page optimisation for generating better traffic. On the other hand, off-page optimisation is what helps a website rank higher in SERPs.

It might seem like there’s not much of a difference, so we’ll elaborate on that.

Factors That Affect On-Page SEO

On-page SEO is affected by a lot of factors. These include:

  • Relevant Content

The phrase “content is king” has been around for a long time, but it’s relevant now more than ever in the digital era. You must continuously optimise your content with the right keywords, descriptions, and internal linking. However, you will get little to no engagement if the content is irrelevant.

  • Appropriate Keywords

Keywords are the foundation of SEO, which is why it’s still front and centre. While short keywords were first used and are still around today, the focus has shifted towards long-tail keywords because people use specific, narrowed-down search queries.

  • Correct Title Tags

The title tag is essentially the web page description, or rather the main heading that you can see in the SERPs. Title tags are essential because they can help your page rank higher. Aside from that, title tags work best when kept in 65 characters or less.

  • Meta Descriptions

A meta description is a short description that appears below the URL on the SERPs below the headline in a social post. It describes the content on the page and is also something that helps your page rank higher on SERPs. Meta descriptions work best when they have 155 characters or less to show the full description.

  • SSL HTTPS

A web page without proper security is close to failure, which is why it’s crucial. If your page suffers from a cyber attack, your operations will be significantly affected, and there’s also the possibility of doing everything from scratch.

Luckily, Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) security technology can help. If SSL is enabled, the chances of a third party reaching you and your visitors’ web servers are lessened. This ensures that information entered by your visitors on your site is safe. Additionally, Google favours sites that are SSL-enabled which helps in boosting visibility.

  • Mobile Friendliness

Most people can now do tasks with one device: the smartphone. Because of this, information is both figuratively and literally in the palm of your hand. Smartphones are essentially handheld computers, so it makes sense to make your website mobile-friendly.

If your website isn’t mobile-friendly, your audience will have to pinch or zoom just to view content. This is a negative factor because it throws off prospective customers. Aside from that, Google also takes a site’s mobile friendliness into account, which is all the more critical.

Factors That Affect Off-Page SEO

Unlike on-page SEO, off-page SEO is only affected by two factors: backlinks and domain authority.

  • Backlinks

The more sites are linked to your content, the more domain authority is granted to your site by Google. If domain authority is high, it boosts your ranking in SERPs. Because of this, many marketers make use of questionable link-building methods.

These methods are considered inorganic, which can be detrimental to your site’s success. To prevent this, you can make use of organic methods that are undoubtedly effective, such as:

  • Guest Blogging
  • Features in industry trade publications
  • Podcast guesting
  • Seeking out contacts who can share your content
  • Participating in industry-relevant communities, such as forums
  • Hosting events
  • Press releases

  • Domain Authority

Domain authority is a number between 1 to 100 given to your website by search engines to determine its strength. Websites with higher domain authority are prioritised, while those with lower authority are likely to rank low.

Domain authority is also measured by a few different factors, such as how long you’ve had your domain name, the domain name’s history, how many backlinks it has, and the number of 404 pages. Your domain authority will be high if the technical aspects are handled well.

Conclusion

SEO is not a one and done process and requires constant improvements. The information above details everything there is to know about on-page and off-page SEO, so you should ensure that all of them are covered if you want your website to rank higher and generate traffic and engagement.
